Governor Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has decided to lower the retirement age for doctors in the area, despite considerable opposition from the medical community.
It should be mentioned that the provincial parliament passed a law raising the retirement age for doctors from 60 to 65.
Later, the GB government published a notification approving the measure to raise the retirement age of clinical professionals, including physicians, BSN nurses, and radiology, anesthesia, and ICU technicians.

The notice was condemned by the GB Young Doctors’ Association and the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), who called it a “black law.” Furthermore, they believed it would limit the recruitment of new physicians and the advancement of junior doctors.
They had also announced a boycott of all government hospitals’ outpatient departments (OPDs).
Because of the considerable resistance to the judgment, Chief Minister Gulbar Khan obtained an injunction to prevent its execution.
Governor GB Syed Mehdi Shah has now issued an ordinance under Article 74 of the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan Order, 2018, canceling the previous order that raised the retirement age to 65.
