Government Proposes Another Rs5.62/Unit Increase in Electricity Rates

The federal government is getting ready to unleash yet another increase in electricity rates, which can increase electricity rates by Rs. 5.62 per unit.

According to those with knowledge of the event, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) was asked by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) to allow an increase in electricity tariffs of Rs. 5.62 per unit.

This request by CPPA to NEPRA, made in December, is about the fuel price adjustment.

On January 31, NEPRA is set to hold a hearing about the CPPA’s proposal. Should the request be granted, consumers could be subject to a burden exceeding Rs. 49 billion.

It is important to note that a spike in fuel price adjustments, which can reach up to Rs.8.56 per unit, is already causing problems for energy users. This has made the effects of growing prices on consumers much worse.

It was discovered that an extra charge of Rs. 4.13 per unit was added to the January electricity bills as part of the monthly fuel adjustment for November 2023. Customers already struggle with a base tariff that costs more than Rs. 50 per unit, but this month brought on further costs for separate monthly and quarterly adjustments.

It is anticipated that customers will recover from this three-month adjustment through March 2024. An extra fee of Rs. 1.15 per unit is imposed in the adjustment for January through March 2024.
