NUST Formula Student Team Teams Up with Tesla to Build Hybrid Vehicle

With the assistance of the massive electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, the NUST Formula Student Team (NFST), well-known for competing in and winning the Formula Student Competition in the UK, is creating something new.

For the previous ten years, the crew has been developing cars using combustion engines and competing in educational motorsport competitions; this time, however, everything is different.

Rear-wheel drive version of the Honda CBR 600 F4i motorcycle engine is being used by NFST to power their hybrid car.

A 60-volt Lithium-ion battery pack will power the car, while Tesla will supply the battery management system.

Every time a motor or motors take power from the battery pack, the battery management system regulates the voltage and temperature of the batteries to guarantee maximum performance and usefulness.

Although a battery management system may seem straightforward on paper, there are many moving parts, and now that Tesla is providing NFST with the system, things will move much more easily.

The competition is set to start in July of 2024, and NFST hopes to complete the vehicle’s construction between March and April of that same year.

Regarding Tesla’s support, the group states,

“When Tesla joins the NUST Formula Student Team (NFST), the institution is once again made to feel proud. This is a revolutionary time for NUST’s creativity.

Their continuous triumphs at Formula Student competitions, as the most prominent and established university team in Pakistan, continue to inspire pride in the country. NFST is well-positioned for even greater success on the international scene with Tesla.”

The team won first place in the Lap Time Simulation event earlier this year at Formula Student UK 2023 Concept Class, which assesses a car’s handling skills and how quickly it completes a simulated racing course.

In the design and cost categories, which evaluate the vehicle’s engineering and economic viability, NFST achieved sixth place.
