Mobile Phone Installment Plan Awaits Ministries Approval

After the approval from the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Information Technology is going to release the installment plan for mobile phones. 15th January was the scheduled date for the announcement of the installment plan but now it has experienced a significant delay.

After long discussions with stakeholders during a working group meeting on mobile financing, the ministry is ready to forward the idea to the federal government for additional review and approval.

As per various reports, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications is planning to issue the directives for mobile phone installment plan. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications first presented the Federal Government with the Mobile Phone Financing Policy in December of the previous year.

The main objective of this scheme is to facilitate people who are not financially strong. And to provide them with easy access to technology by offering them interest-free installment options.

The policy also describes steps to deal with defaulters, such as how to disable the mobile devices of those who don’t pay their installments on time.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will play a major role in putting this policy into effect, which is a change from the traditional practice of relying only on mobile firms for enforcement. A key component of carrying out the blocking operations will be the PTA’s Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS).
